The Kung Fu and Lion Dance Union of WA

The Kung Fu and Lion Dance Union of WA is a voluntary and informal association between four kung fu schools. The purpose of this Union is to act with a united front, promoting goodwill, cooporation, and the coordination of our resources for large performances in a mutually beneficial manner.

The Union comprises of the Chowka Kung Fu School of WA, Quyen Luong's Kung Fu Academy, the Choy Li Fut School of WA and the Chin Woo Athletic Association of WA.

The bonds between the members are strong - not just because of our common outlook, but because of the relationships the sifu's have fostered. They are not only professional partners, but friends who call on each other when needed.

Membership is therefore not binding or selective, but a natural outcome of the shared motives, goals and honesty of its members.

The performance was held in the now demolished James Street car park. Approximately one thousand onlookers crammed into the area. Many had gained vantage points on the various carpark levels that overlooked the performance area below.

This demonstration represented the official Chinese New Year celebrations for Northbridge - the location of Perth's Chinatown, and also Perth's main restaurant, bar, and disco district. Thanks again to the City of Perth, who donated two new Lion heads to each of the schools. Official guests included the Mayor of Perth, and other leading council members.

Chinese New Year 1997 - A combined performance with the Union together with the Chung Wah Association Lion Dance Troupe.

This performance was part of the official Chinese New Year celebrations for the City of Perth, and promoted as such in major newspapers leading up to the event. Celebrations consisted of traditional Chinese singing and dancing by all age groups, tai chi demonstrations, kung fu, and of course lion dancing.

In this photo, the schools joined in for a four way 'prize'. Getting the 'choy' or greens is usually not possible without a difficult challenge for the lion. On this occasion the challenge was not in solving a puzzle, but in providing the clearest view for onlookers, of 10 or so lions chasing greens.

This performance was held in the main city square, Forrest Chase, opposite the central Perth GPO. The vastness and accessibility of this area attracted thousands of onlookers throughout the course of the performance.
