Chow Ka (Jow Ga, Zhou Jia) in Vietnam

Lau Hoe Lurng - Second Generation Chow Ka

In 1931, Lau Hoe Lurng went to promote Chinese martial arts in Vietnam, while his younger brother (Lau Jum Lurng) remained in Hong Kong to assist Chow Tin.

In 1937, Lau Hoe Lurng founded the first Chow Ka school of Vietnam in Ho-Chi-Min City. Lau Hoe Lurng's students eventually opened many more schools, swelling the total number of students beyong count. This established Lau Hoe Lurng as a famous martial artist in the region, and made Chow Ka the most successful martial arts school in Vietnam. As of 1997, the original Ho-Chi-Min City branch had 108 students, all of whom are hard working, dedicated, creative and have never refused invitations to perform for charity.

Today, most of the Chow Ka schools in Vietnam are derived from Lau Hoe Lurng, just as most of the schools in Hong Kong and Kowloon are derived from Chow Biu, Chow Hip and Chow Tin.

Chow Ka also has many more schools and students all over the world creating strong foundations for the school's future.

The school is well known for its performances in:

  • Martial Arts

  • Chi Kung

  • Northern and Southern style
    Lion Dance (Moe See)

  • Dragon Dance (Moe Loong)

  • The school specialises in fluorescent lion and dragon costumes, and a 100 metre golden dragon that requires 40 people to operate. Types of lion dance include; getting the greens (kau choy), walking on scaffolds, climbing tall bamboo poles, and ‘jumping over the wall’ (unveiling of signs).

The lion dance troupe has grown into one of the most well known troupes in Vietnam. In recent national competitions they were the most awarded team, and hold the longest running consecutive wins. Whether they win or lose however, they always keep their heads. This allows them to continuously improve. Each year their performance gets better as they aim for perfection.

Lau Kim Churng - Third Generation Chow Ka

When Lau Hoe Lurng passed away in 1971, his son Lau Kim Churng took over the Ho-Chi-Min City Chow Ka Kung Fu school and Lion Dance troupe.

Lau Kim Churng has a strong interest in Chinese medicine and is also devoted to community work. For this reason, he established a non-profit traditional Chinese medical clinic catering for the poor and needy. The Ho-Chi-Min City Chow Ka school volunteers for many benevolent functions, including fundraising for orphanages, old age homes, local hospitals, local schools, and the annual charity ‘Yun Yee performance’.

Lau Kim Churng is very well respected within the Vietnamese martial arts community for promoting Chinese martial arts. He has opened a number of additional gyms and continues to teach and train. Great emphasis is placed on ‘Yun Yee’, health, improving society, and perfecting martial arts.

The Ho-Chi-Min City Chow Ka school not only prizes traditional martial arts, but aims to perfect the Chinese art of dragon and lion dancing.

The school is divided into three sections - one for kung fu, one for lion dancing, and one for dragon dancing.

The 60th anniversary (in 1997) of the Ho-Chi-Min City branch was marked by the acknowledgement that Chow Ka has spread to every corner of the globe.

Students from the Ho-Chi-Min City branch have opened schools in California USA (Jung Mun Jurk), Sweden (Lau Boe Churng), Brisbane Australia (Lun Joy Lum), Melbourne Australia (Jung Gong Seng), Sydney Australia (Ley Yiu Gwun), and Perth Australia (Lurng Gong Poy - Sifu Patrick Luong), to name but a few.

Together with his four brothers, Lau Kim Churng continues the Chow Ka tradition. (L-R: Lau Kim Churng with brothers Lau Sei Churng and Lau Wing Churng)
