Kalgoorlie
is located roughly 600km east of Perth and
well reknowned as Australia's gold capital. The Kalgoorlie site is located on the 'Golden Mile',
the world's richest square mile of gold bearing earth - producing approximately 850,000 ounces of
gold annually.
Kalgoorlie is also home to the largest opencut mine in Australia, and one the largest in the world.
The 'Superpit' is close to 4km long, 1.5km wide and 650 metres deep! Mining continues 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, every week of the year.
We were lucky enough to be shown one of the Kalgoorlie's first mineshafts and its gold
smeltering procedures.
