Ranking
The
Chow Ka ranking system adheres to a traditional kung fu ranking system.
There is no belt system - all students simply wear a red belt as part of the uniform.
Seniority is relative and derived from the length of time that a student has been with the school.
Students who join before you are called 'Si Hing' (older brother), while students who join after
you are called 'Si Dai' (younger brother).
As the training atmosphere is friendly and relatively informal - ranking is only relevant for
instruction and management. The level of advancement attained by a student is dictated by their
level of skill, practice and commitment.
Students
are taught according to their readiness to advance, and different
skills may be learnt by different students at different times. There is however, a general pattern of advancement.
The four general skill levels are: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Assistant Instructor. To progress,
students are expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in their knowledge of forms,
the execution and precision of techniques, and the application of techniques in combat.
In addition, there are strength, balance and endurance tests. Sifu Patrick Luong will also require the successful navigation of tasks specific to each level. Assistant Instructors, for example, are
required to spar on poles.
